In Proverbs 1:7, the Scripture reads, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction” (KJV). For those who have been Christian for any length of time, and have taken seriously that commitment, this passage rings true continually. It rings true when one thinks about the origin of the material universe. It rings true when one gives thought to how life began. It rings true when one thinks about meaning/purpose in life, contrasting the meaning and purpose in life between that which God gives and that which is produced without God. It rings true when one thinks about justice on this earth and, more than that, justice when life is over. It rings true when one thinks about hope and what real love actually is. A wise man will surely hear that which the Lord offers concerning what is truly wise. While there are a great many people who think of themselves as wise in matters pertaining to this world, the “dumbness” of the Lord is far wiser than the greatness of man’s wisdom (cf. 1 Corinthians 1:25).
