“By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible” (Hebrews 11:3, ESV). We learn from this verse that “faith” is not some nebulous “I think” or “I feel” way of life. In fact, it is nothing of the sort. It is something much more substantive than that. “Faith” is directly connected to “trust,” and what does one trust, but that which can believed in! “And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him” (Hebrews 11:6). “Faith” is substance, and the substance has its existence in the Eternal One, and the very word He spoke (Romans 10:17; 2 Cor. 5:7). Thus, I live by faith. My faith is in the One who exists and gave us His word that I can understand and live by.
