Better is the one who is slighted but has a servant, Than he who honors himself but lacks bread (Proverbs 12:9, NKJV). It is clear that the point of the proverb is humility. The one who is slighted, but is secure in who he is and what he has is far better off than one who thinks much of himself, but can’t even provide for himself; much less can he provide for those who depend on him. Not only does this apply to physical sustenance, but wisdom also—for what wisdom will he give? Those who seek after appearances reach for the wind and lose respect while doing so. RT
